haryana: Amid Omicron alert, Haryana waits for genome sequencing machines | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: Even as new Covid variant ‘Omicron’ is spreading across the globe, the state of Haryana continues to be dependent on New Delhi labs for genome sequencing as even after nine months, the Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (BD PGIMS) at Rohtak is yet to get the state-of-the-art instrument. Health experts warn that this delay this may prove disastrous for the state.
Notably, the proposal to procure two machines and setting up of the required instructure was made in the month of April itself, when the Delta variant was at its peak. However, due to alleged red tapism, the machines could not see the light of the day. In what appears to be more embarrassing, only one machine has been procured in the entire state of Haryana at Instrumental Section of Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), but that is used only for research.
Officials in the Medical education and Research department evaded the queries. Similarly, senior officials of the health department too evaded queries on the case. However, senior medicos in PGIMS Rohtak confirmed the same.
“The health and the MER departments are in talks with offices concerned of the MDU. An agreement is likely to be reached and we can started genome sequencing there by next week,’’ the official said. Genome sequencing s not only used for sequencing of samples to detect the new variants of Covid, but is also used for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
